A California Backyard

Rusticdrivebackyard_3

It was a gorgeous weekend here in Northern California.  We were able to squeeze in one more Indian Summer celebration, which means – barbecues! Like many of you our BBQ is used year round, we even BBQ our Thanksgiving turkey.   I think that was the theme for this weekend’s round up.  California living is definitely about spending a lot of it outside, which makes a functional yard a key feature to any home.

I had the chance to check out a few open houses this weekend, but by far the best back yard had to be the outdoor sanctuary at 2874 Rustic Drive in San Jose.

It had great backyard furniture and a swing, which made it easy to see yourself hosting a summer or fall party.  The koi pond/fountain was soothing and the grass lush.  Pavers topped the whole thing off making it picture perfect for an afternoon of lounging and reading.  The yard made great use of a small space for both relaxing alone and entertaining a large crowd.   If the realtors passed out lemonade at the open house, I would have sat down all afternoon.

Lookiloos Launch Party at The 88

The other night the Lookiloos Team and 100 of our closest friends and colleagues gathered to officially celebrate the launch of Lookiloos at the posh penthouse of The 88

With food and drinks mixed up by one of our favorite downtown restaurants, E&O, we were all set to celebrate high above San Jose on the swanky 21st floor.  You may recall I wrote a story about the great space.  In true Lookiloos form, I imagined what it would be like to live there and the types of parties I’d host – and low and behold, The 88 was gracious enough to make a dream come true.  Thank you Seth, Brandy and Ron!

The view of the San Jose skyline on the penthouse deck at sunset and by candlelight stole my breath away. Many party goers remarked, "This is not the San Jose I am used to." or  "Who gets to party up here, where you could practically touch the stars? Not many."  Since the number of high rises in downtown San Jose could be counted on two hands, that assessment was definitely on the money. Guests were also given private tours of the building and its amenities.

Lookiloos Launch Party at The 88 - Team

We were entertained by the Michael Brilliot of the Jazz Mechanics and raffled off prizes donated by some our favorite artisans from Etsy. Thanks to Dhelia of La Jardiniere and Jan DiCintio who donated handmade pillows. We talked about our partnership with the San Jose Mercury News, where our articles will be featured occasionally in the Saturday Home and Garden section. We are thrilled. Look for our articles in the paper and online.

The weather, music, food and company were perfect! We are ecstatic about everyone’s enthusiasm and grateful for their support.   Thanks for attending and if you couldn’t make it -stay tuned we’ll be sure to host another party in another fantastic spot soon!

All my "party hosting" in fantasy homes may come true after all.

Built It Green Home Tour Recap

Built It Green Home Tour Recap

Typically home tours are all about the Persian rugs, the antiques, crown molding and the designer window coverings, the Build It Green Home Tour featured that and so much more.  I spent the morning comparing the homes in Santa Clara county and found that my fellow lookiloos and I talked more about the "bones" of the house than what we could find adorning it.

There were a total of 14 homes on the tour, 2 stood out for their sheer difference in approach.  Both homes were in located in the upscale Willow Glen neighborhood of San Jose off the 280 freeway, within walking distance to the trendy Willow Glen main street, Lincoln Avenue.

Built It Green Home Tour Recap - Cherry Avenue
The first home on sunny Cherry Avenue was built by Lorrie Broderick, for whom this was her second venture as a developer.  She purchased the plans for the home online and set out to find ways to make her investment  more green.   I am not quite sure what I expected when I walked in, but the home was gorgeous and modern and frankly, blew my expectations for what "green" meant.  It  quickly inspired me to think about how I could replicate many of the amenities Lorrie installed in my own home.

The bathrooms had Watersense ultra low flush and dual flush toilets and occupancy sensors. They also featured Energy Star bathroom fans, which meant that these fans used 65% less energy, reducing rot, mold and other moisture problems.  The house is well insulated and built with high-performance windows, thus the three story home only has air conditioning on the top floor.

Built It Green Home Tour Recap - Cherry Ave Backyard
Most interesting to me as a parent was the backyard.  Willow Glen being a family friendly neighborhood, Lorrie assumed that the buyers of her home would most likely have a family with small children.  Rather than pouring a full concrete backyard, she saved part of the yard in case a family wanted to put in a jungle gym.  She put down recycled rubber mulch on the right side of the yard which matched the real mulch on the left side.  Purchased at costco.com, she said this recycled material ensured that there would be no mold, slight cushioning for those inevitable falls and no splinters for little toes.  Great idea.

Overall the home had big and small touches for easy green living.  Lorrie was able to recycle 90% of construction waste, used spray foam insulation and low VOC interior paint.

Built It Green Home Tour Recap - Hicks Ave Hallway

In contrast, the home on Hicks Avenue, called Villa Terra,  is architect’s Noel Cross’ dream home. Hidden from the main street by a garden of native California landscaping, this home can be described as a modern day "adobe".  The exterior walls are PISE (pneumatically impacted stabilized earth) – a type of rammed earth construction, where a moistened mix of earth and concrete were sprayed through a hose under pressure against form work.  When the form work is removed then the walls are done.  The results are old world rustic.  The house stays cool and is warmed with radiant floor heating.   The ceiling is insulated with recycled blue jean materials.   The house also featured both a passive solar heating system and a 5.5kW photovoltaic system, where any extra energy generated can be sent back to the power grid for a credit on their monthly bill.

Built It Green Home Tour Recap - Hicks Ave Brickwork
What stood out to me was how much of the home’s materials were reclaimed, that is to say came from other tear down remodeling projects.  Cross used ceiling beams from Eli Thomas store from the old Town and Country Village shopping center, bought two sinks for $15.00 from Whole House Salvage Yard and lockers from the "Robe Room" from the O’Connor Mansion from Notre Dame High School.  The side patio is made up of used bricks reclaimed from 15 different homes.

Built It Green Home Tour Recap - Hicks Ave Dining Room
Overall, the home was absolutely spectacular.  The home was expansive, yet inviting.  I could easily see myself cooking Thanksgiving dinner in their large kitchen or hosting a dinner party that spilled out onto the brick terrace.

Green can certainly be gorgeous and Villa Terra on Hicks Avenue certainly drove that point home.

Blog Roundup - Sharing Favorite Rooms

Kari and Kijsa at the Designing for Life Blog are hosting a fun blog carnival where bloggers are posting up their favorite rooms.  My fellow Lookiloos Desiree and Julia have posted videos about their favorite spaces here and here.  I haven’t done so yet so I thought this is my chance to give you all a sneak peek.  Check out the other peeks into other’s homes here.   Better yet, join the fun and post one of your own!

Blog Roundup - Sharing Favorite Rooms - Dining Room
Here are my answers to the questions they posed:

1. Where it is in your home…
These photos are from my dining room.  There are two things I LOVE about the dining room.  First, the plates I bought from Pottery Barn.  They are all my favorite colors and just match the house perfectly.  Plus it was CHEAP wall art!

Secondly, I love the view from sitting in my dining room and looking into the foyer and living room.  I love bright colors, so I have painted each room a different color.  When you sit in my dining room, you see all the colors and how they blend together.  Note the different shades of yellow.  The floral pictures were hard won at my children’s school auction.

2. Your favorite style (eclectic, Traditional, Cottage, retro, unfinished, Shabby Chic…).
My style is eclectic, colorful, California casual, child friendly, unique, Matisse-like, sometimes abstract.

3. A favorite item in the room (a story about it too, if you want!!)
I love the round window in my living room that you can sort of see above the red Asian media cabinet. It is an unusual feature you would not expect.

Getting Organized to Organize the Office

Getting Organized to Organize the Office

The walls have been painted, I moved my desk in and even my DSL connection is working.  In theory, I am ready to rock with an office and a space all my own.  But I still have boxes of files that should be sorted and books that need a home.  Grrr… so close, but yet, so far away.

I bought a bookcase from Ikea and some shelves, so I am determined to get those assembled this weekend. But I have been thinking that I need something more than a drawer to put things away, I need a system to visually plan my time and work.    And no plain bulletin board and cup holder will do; so I have been on a hunt for the ultimate, modern office organization tool.  I need something that can handle all my tech gadgets and look good.  Not a simple task.

I think I need a white board or chalk board for quick notes. I need a place to charge my phone, camera and other electronics and keep keys and miscellaneous files handy.  I also need see to be able to see a calendar that could handle multiple projects.  This is a photo of a great wall organization system from Pottery Barn.  Looks great and is customizable, but a little steep in price at about $500 for the parts I want. Hmmm, I need the discount version of this.

Anyone have any tips or brilliant ideas?

Place All My Own

Place All My Own

I manage the family schedule and run two businesses out of my home.  Up until recently, when it was time to get to work, I would either clear a space for myself off the dining room table or would cozy up on the wing chair in the living room.  Not unlike many busy moms, I struggled to work and keep the Cheerios off my reports.  But not any more the construction on my garage / rumpus room is complete. Well, mostly, but hey, that is another story.

I now have 175 square feet all to myself.  Well, that is what I keep telling all the members in the family, before they get any ideas that their "treasures" are moving in.  No stuffed animals, no extra soccer balls and no weird electronic equipment that I don’t need.  A resounding YES to an ipod docking station, laptop and inspiring color filled art.

I am pretty excited!  The hubs painted the walls a light slate blue.  I moved in two red asian inspired media cabinets, my old desk and voila!   It is sorely needing to be warmed up more with a bit of personality, but one step at a time.  I picked up a few posters and framed them.  I need a rug (see the samples on the floor?) or something on the ground.  Anyone have an opinion about those FLOR carpet tiles?  I am trying to decide what kind of chairs to put in – help!  A sofa bed maybe?  I am on the hunt, my fellow lookiloos, for some low cost, easy to do home office decorating and organizing ideas.  The options abound.  Decisions, decisions…

Tapestry Arts Festival Round Up

Tapestry Arts Festival Round Up

I traded peeking at homes this weekend for being an art lookiloo instead.  Kids in tow, I braved the San Jose heat and hit the 33rd Annual Tapestry Arts Festival in downtown San Jose.  What is not to like – funnel cake, lemonade and booths filled with local art? It is just the place to find  unique decorating pieces that you just can’t pick up at Pottery Barn.  I love getting the chance to speak with artists and getting a glimpse into what inspired them.

Here are a few things that caught my eye:

Created by artisan, Dave Bruce from Phoenix, AZ, these are not your average bird house.  Take a closer look, each bird house is uniquely made with bright color and household items, like paintbrushes, door knobs and spoons.  These are sure to attract equally spunky birds to your backyard.  Check out his site here.  He also hand crafts furniture.

Tapestry Arts Festival Round Up - Oscar CelisI also ran into award winning artist Oscar Celis of New Creations Metal Arts. Based in Murrieta, he makes surreal indoor/outdoor art out of sheet metal.  Each work of art is created free hand, hammered, welded and painted.  Ranging from rhinos to sun bursts to wine racks, you are sure to find something that will perk up your backyard.  Check out his site to catch him at a local festival.

Tapestry Arts Festival Round Up - Dave Drake with the Bed Desk

I am always impressed by ingenious inventors of things that seem obvious but are perfectly executed.  Dave Drake developed The Bed Desk (something I’ve been needing for years!) to save  those of us who like to read in bed, need a work surface when lounging on the sofa and need some place to keep our warm lap top off your knees.   Sold in specialty stores world wide, ebay or via art shows, Dave is happy to customize each of the birch wood tables to make it taller or shorter for you if needed.  Each product comes with a life time guarantee.  Check out his video here.   Yes, this is Dave himself modeling the Bed Desk!

1928 Mediterranean Beauty - Shasta Hanchett, San Jose

I love older homes.  The fine details and interesting stories of the people who lived there draw me in.

1928 Mediterranean Beauty - Shasta Hanchett, San Jose - Outside
Built in 1928, the house in San Jose’s historic Shasta Hanchett neighborhood 1322 Martin Avenue is a beauty.  This two story 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath has a nice mix of a historic home with modern conveniences. I was struck immediately by the welcoming living room.  The original fireplace was flanked by two beautiful windows, while the front of the home had gorgeous floor length bay windows allowing a lot of light. The room made me want to close the french doors, curl right up on the wing chair with a magazine and kick up my feet.

1928 Mediterranean Beauty - Shasta Hanchett, San Jose - TileThe bedrooms were good sized, with surprisingly large closets considering the age of the home.  The kitchen has been remodeled recently and has a sun filled breakfast nook.  Here is where I really appreciate modern conveniences – a large fridge, double ovens and industrial gas stoves make all the difference.  The downstairs bathroom had been carefully restored. It was stunning and meticulous.  Check out this custom made tile.

As I walked through the house, I  thought these formal rooms1928 Mediterranean Beauty - Shasta Hanchett, San Jose - Party Room
are beautiful, but where does everyone REALLY spend their time and let it all loose?  Then I stumbled upon the "party room".  As you may know I have been struggling with my own garage remodel, so this spot gave me a few ideas.  Attached to this home’s garage is a 350 sq foot great room complete with a fireplace.  The realtor, Karen Smith, told me that the owners used it for hosting all sorts of parties, including Thanksgiving.  The room opened up into a lush backyard and gazebo.  I could easily imagine the parties that must have happened there – the kind with lights strung up, soft music playing and fantastic dancing in this "Dance Hall".   The possibilities are endless. The great neighborhood, attention paid to little details and open entertaining space makes this home one of my favorites this weekend. I think I am in love!
