A Little Hollywood Glam For My Dining Room

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

DiningSo far, out of all the areas in my home that I’m decking out for the holidays—I’m loving how my dining room turned out! Keeping with the green walls and my silver candle holder that’s mounted to the wall—I decided to do everything in silver, glass and mirrors with touches of green. I took an old wreath frame and wrapped a white boa around it. I finished it off with a string of very tiny silver jingle bells.

Dining Buffet The large vases were from my husband’s company function years ago. I filled them with different sized silver jingle bells. I purchased the bleached dried flowers and the greenery was from the bottom of our tree—love the zero cost there!  Then I gathered all my frames that were either silver or mirrored and added old holiday or winter photos. I loved putting this room together.

Boa and Hydrangea

So, I’m adding my foyer to this post since it’s leads right into the dinning room. I’ve been collecting nutcrackers for about 15 years and they always have guarded the staircase.

IMG_5301I’m not sure where I’d put them if not on the stairs. Now, it’s time to put all the empty boxes back in the attic until January.

Hope you enjoyed Christmas at my home!

Men’s Study-Smoking Lounge Enlivened with Style, Collections

Men's Smoking Lounge by lulu Pom

Men's Smoking Lounge by lulu Pom

Laura Ziffer and Linda McFalone of lulu Pom in Los Gatos always seem to get great spaces to work with when the Summit League’s Homes for the Holidays tour comes around. And this year was no exception when they were asked to decorate the study as well as the wine cellar of the Kenny home.

In a manner of days, the duo transformed what had looked more like a woman’s sitting room into a masculine man’s smoking room, or as Linda and Laura put it, “a history-reading, cigar-smoking, absynthe-drinking room.”

Niche with collections and curiosities

Niche with collections and curiosities

The homeowners were collectors themselves. The husband had shelves of war books, and collections of lighters and leather boxes. “We regrouped and edited and added to,”  Laura said.

Some of the “added to” included the central focal point — a pair of vintage wing-back chairs whose dark wooden frames were bleached and wire-brushed, then reupholstered in a faux bois fabric with nickle nail heads and placed atop a zebra-skin rug for a “pattern on pattern” look.

Linda and Laura are expert at pairing vintage with modern and did so in the niche, where they replaced a sofa with a sparkling  starburst mirror and a credenza to display books, bankers’ boxes, crystal decanters and curiosities. They painted the ceiling a high-gloss gray to add more sparkle.

Absynthe glasses at the ready

The wine cellar “was fabulous already,” Linda said, so they had fun getting it ready for a “blind wine tasting.”  They wrapped wine bottles in brown paper bags then tied large stylized numbers on each for guests to rate their tastes. Big candles were placed on the table, surrounded by galvanized wine stools. (The numbers, galvanized stools and candles can all be purchased at their Los Gatos shop on Main Street.)

While the spaces may have been designed with men in mind, the many women on the tour certainly wanted to linger.

My Favorite Space: My Living Room at Christmas

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Living RoomMy favorite room in my home is the living room. From the shape of the barrel ceiling to the Hand Craft Tile on the fireplace, I love spending time in there. Thanks to my handy laptop—I do spend a lot of time in there—working or enjoying a glass of wine. But, at Christmastime the time spent in my living room quadruples. When we remodeled this was the only room left standing. I told the architect to build around this room and he did a perfect job. That’s how much I love this room.

Christmas StockingsNow you can see all the stockings are hung on the bar with care.  Let’s face it I’m a mom to four boys! And, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to bring in a little holiday staging cheer.

My Clementine Sparkling Cocktail The Sparkling Wine is compliments of my sister—It pays to know someone in the wine biz. I added a teaspoon of Clementine juice and one slice. They were so delicious! The little clock niche above the fireplace isn’t large enough to hold 8 stockings. Yes, 8. 2 parents, 4 kids, 1 dog and 1 for the cats to share = 8.

Christmas TreeThe tree is definitely the center piece. And, after 25 Christmas trees—all Douglas firs—this year we got a white fir. It smells heavenly, has long needles and is much less bushy than the Douglas. I used to do the multi-colored lights, but about 12 years ago I switched to all white and haven’t looked back.

Mr. MouseI’ve been collecting ornaments since I was 6. I’d get one every year. Now, of course some have seen better days and some are gone completely, but my oldest ornament is from 1972. My gray little mouse with his Santa outfit—he’s missing an eye, but I can’t imagine my tree without him. This year we cut way back on ornaments because of Fiona. This will be her first Christmas—and let me tell having a big puppy at Christmas is a lot like having toddlers. You’re watching them—they seem uninterested in any holiday decorations—you run to answer the phone—that’s when you hear the crash.

So this is my living room—next up is the dining room and foyer.

Summit League: Adding Light and White to Backyard Landscape

Monday, December 6th, 2010

IMG_5059The backyard was beautiful to begin with — park-like lawn, bubbling fountain, outdoor fireplace. But when Dhelia Fahrner, a.k.a., La Jardiniere, was asked to donate her time to the Summit League’s Homes for the Holidays tour in Los Gatos to make the garden tour-ready, she had a couple of things in mind: light and white.

IMG_5066The garden of the Kenney Home was green and pastoral, but somewhat shady and dark. It needed some “pop.”  So, after planting white cyclamen in the beds, she turned to the  major focal points — the fireplace patio and the French doors at the back of the study. Bringing in two graceful urns filled with white hydrangeas, azaleas and wispy maidenhair ferns– plus a piece of garden statuary from her friend Laura Ziffer at Lulu Pom in Los Gatos — Dhelia created a graceful vignette flanking the French doors.

“Having the statuary and urns accentuate the architecture of the French doors — to me, it looked like something you’d see in Europe,” Dhelia said.

Making her way around the patio to the fireplace area, she planted more white flowers and bright green cypress in the homeowner’s pots.  “I wanted the chartreuse all over to pull your eye,” she said.

IMG_5060On the table in front of the outdoor fireplace, she planted a white cement pot with succulents and surrounded the base with the kind of ornamentation that might be seen on a mantel – layers of moss, lichen, bleeched pinecones and antlers. Small birch containers showcased miniature Christmas tree cypress and amaryllis.

Instead of using traditional red poinsiettas to create a Christmas feel, she wanted the setting to appear “organic.  A winter wonderland.”

Indeed it was.

Family Room Mantel

Family Room Mantel

Well, as I announced on the Lookiloos Facebook page, because I needed a deadline—I am showing you you all what I have been busy with since packing up everything turkey!

Today I am sharing my family room mantel. I’ve been feeling very nostalgic lately and so I dug up some old childhood memories to display.  I keep fussing with it and I might be driving my kids nuts, since I have to stand back to look at it then cross in front of the television to adjust then cross back in to ponder my new modification.  This has been known to go on for 15 minutes at a time.  “Mom, do you know how hard it is to play Black Ops with the Christmas music blaring and now you keep crossing in front—it looks good enough” said by, well really you could insert any one of 4 names here.

Raggedy and Friends

Raggedy and Friends

I loved Raggedy Ann when I was little and my Grandmother gave me the books Christmas of 1973. This Cinderella clock woke me up for years. Charlie, my husband purchased the polar bear puzzle on a trip to Park City, Utah for our kids 10 years ago.  He is always a favorite.  We usually he see who can assemble him the fastest each year.  I have never won the title.

Kalimba

Kalimba

Charlie was 12 he and his mom split the cost of this Kalimba at a local music shop.

Poinsettias

Poinsettias

So,  that’s my family room mantel.  Next up will be my living room and the tree.  I’d love to know—do you decorate every room in your house or just a few.  I currently have 4 areas decorated but debating on more.  My grandmother was always great at saying “WHEN.”  Me sometimes not so much!

A glimpse from the 2008 tour

A glimpse from the 2008 tour

One of the most elegant home tours is right around the corner and we’re giving away a pair of tickets to the lucky winner! The Summit League is presenting its Homes for the Holidays tour on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 3 and 4th.

Three beautiful Saratoga homes will be featured this year, each decorated in full holiday regalia by local designers and florists.

If it was this great in 2008, imagine 2010.

If it was this great in 2008, imagine 2010.

The first is a blend of traditional and California contemporary in one of Saratoga’s oldest neighborhoods on Farwell Avenue.  It was built in 1959 as a traditional east coast Williamsburg-style house and in 1999 received a total reconstruction and expansion.

The second house is a contemporary Tuscan home built in 2002 with a classic red-tiled roof, arched windows and warm interiors. The family built the house around outdoor entertaining. The resort-inspired grounds include a mosaic-tiled pool, terraces with wisteria-covered pergolas, fireplaces and a full kitchen with a pizza oven.

3114634199_5c01d1cf04_b[1]The third house is a French Chateau built atop a Saratoga foothill. The entry hall features a pier mirror that the family brought around the Horn in the late 1800s. A “tree house” office was added during the most recent renovation and the dining room decor evokes the feeling of a french garden. The renovated kitchen is state-of-the-art.

Leave a comment about why you want to go on the Summit League Homes for the Holidays tour and we’ll select a winner for a pair of tickets!

Window seat in the Dutch Colonial

Window seat in the Dutch Colonial

It’s that time of year again, when the air gets crisp and the little blue booties come out. That’s right: home tour time. And four beautiful homes will be on the 15th annual Rose Garden Homes Tour in the heart of San Jose next weekend, Oct. 16-17. followed by a lovely garden luncheon and tea with a holiday boutique.  We have two pairs of tickets to give away — (that’s a $30 value per ticket! See below for details on how to win). And, lucky Lookiloos, we got a sneak peek at the homes, and style and great ideas abound.

We were able to take a few advance photos, just to lure you in. Don’t you love the window seat in the photo above? That’s in the Dutch Colonial. While the owners are kind enough to host the tea in the backyard, they are also opening the first floor to the tour. (Lookiloos got access to the second floor –with permission of course — and will  we run a full slide show of that space later. Stay tuned.)

Vintage Dutch Colonial

Vintage Dutch Colonial

This 1920s Dutch Colonial, lovingly restored and maintained by Brent Riedberger and Chris Johansen,  is a real beauty inside and out. The entry hall alone is reason to take a look, and the remodeled kitchen and grand living and dining rooms are not to be missed. The tea will be in the backyard, where Brent used a lot of salvage material for the brickward and pavillion.

French-Style Estate Once Home to Unwed Mothers

French-Style Estate Once Home to Unwed Mothers

This gorgeous home, owned by Nora Sandoval and Digby Horner, used to be a charitable home for teenage unwed mothers. In this couple’s hands, they have restored the home to its original grandeur, getting rid of cribs in the library and lockers in the entry hall, and carefully bringing it back to a new life. The living room is spectacular with Bradbury and Bradbury wallpaper from Benicia and a century old pool table. The kitchen is to die for — I mean it.

1940s New England Style Home, with Big Additions

1940s New England Style Home, with Big Additions

This New England style home is the family home of Liz and Mark Page and their two children, who attend St. Martin of Tours Elementary School, which is sponsoring the tour. With two big additions in the front and back, the couple still maintained the look and feel of the original.

1940 Brick Ranch-style home

1940 Brick Ranch-style home

This home looks traditional on the outside, but wait until you get inside. This home mixes the traditional front rooms with a remodeled modern kitchen and family room and master suite addition on top. Look for San Jose’s own Fireclay Tile in the kitchen, and great indoor-outdoor living from the great room to the yard. And the master shower is a masterpiece in itself.

Looki: I Did It Myself

Strawberry lemonade never tasted so sweet!

Strawberry lemonade never tasted so sweet!

Ten years ago we remodeled our cute little home, because the duct tape we were using to hold it together was starting to peel. I never really gave too much thought about a front porch—but thank goodness my fabulous architect did! When we got the first round of plans, I loved the front porch. I could hardly wait to be sipping my first cup of coffee while perusing the morning paper on MY front porch. Now, funny thing is it never was MY front porch. It belonged to the skateboards, freebords, roller blades, razor scooters, bikes, the very stinky hockey gear and the random welder (don’t ask). Yes, I have 4 active boys and the front porch was the proof. I needed a space that I could call my own without tripping over all the hazards.

IMG_4820IMG_4818

I decided to clear out all the “gear” and reclaim my space. My first thought was French Country. Maybe a Toile in a cheery yellow for the seat cushions. White and blue for accent pillows. I thought they would go so nicely with 2 wicker chairs that I recently painted black. I headed to Home Goods and wandered the rows of chair cushions and pillows—nothing in yellow, but these coral patterned cushions caught my eye and I never looked back. Next, I found a solid Ralph Lauren ($14.99) pillow and a cream based embroidered with a coral pattern pillow ($16.99).

IMG_4789
The only thing I needed now was some sort of fabric to re-cover the ratty sea grass ottoman. I hit the jackpot when I found this Tommy Hilfiger duvet cover for a whopping $29.99. And, I only needed half of it.

IMG_4807IMG_4801
Once the color scheme was in place, I headed to Summerwinds Nursery to pick out my perfect posies. I have to admit I love walking through the nursery. It’s never a quick trip for me—ahhhh, wandering the aisles. Getting back on track, I loaded up the convertible with a few jumbo packs, a couple of daisies and impatients and a gerber daisy.

IMG_4784

I loved putting it all together. I got the tray from Soltice, the orange vase came from Summerwinds, the bird house was a true find at the Alameda Antique Fair and the watering can was left behind when we bought the house. One of my favorite things on the new front is that old watering can–that doesn’t hold water anymore. I’d like to take credit for putting that gerber daisy in it, but I got the idea from another blog Hoosier Homemade. My only big purchase was the aqua pot and the hydrangea—for just under $70. But, I’m a sucker for hydrangeas and that aqua color was to perfect to pass up.

Impatients and the very stinky hockey gear!

Impatients and the very stinky hockey gear!

Now, it’s been a whole week and all that “gear” has stayed away. OK, one exception has been made—the very stinky hockey gear is staying—but at least it is much neater. And, that I can live with. Sipping my first glass of strawberry lemonade with my feet up on the ottoman was pure heaven. We have spent nearly every evening out there—pure bliss.

My front porch does seem a little on the girlie side, but in my defense I do live with a lot of testosterone and a balance was needed. Now MY universe is balanced!

4612421658_40653c41f7_o

Will this be the year my so-called master bath gets a makeover? My husband took a sledgehammer to our shower seven years ago when the pan leaked into the laundry room below. Silly me, I thought we were going to re-tile!

A tour through Willow Glen homes earlier this spring certainly gave me some inspiration. Desiree took some nice photos to study…  I love the simplicity of this one above. with the grey marble and black detail.

 4612404564_ac69aa2084_b

I love Asian, with this big soaking tub. But I can tell you right now, it would never fit in my tiny bathroom!

4612421150_fb25724f46_o

Another simple marble slab top. Lovely. And those orchids are gorgeous.

4612420274_b7db1ff610_o

I like the idea of going with a neutral palette and adding a splash of color with great accessories.

Adding color in the border is fun. I also like artwork on bathroom walls to add personality.

Tudor Remodel:Old World Style Gets Chic Makeover

4611916891_f7aeee0945_o

When you’re getting your house ready for a home tour, it’s great to have a loyal crew. Into the night, homeowner Anna Pizzo, her designer Kathleen Monarch and stager Margo Leal pulled out their favorite things to create sumptuous tablescapes, indoors and out, to complement Pizzo’s updated storybook Tudor. And a home tour just isn’t complete without floral designer Jose Ibarra coming in with his finishing touches, including a dramatic spray of dogwood in the front window.

4612528152_e748e21576_o

(Don’t you just love it when homeowners make the front window look great from inside and out, instead of just leaving the back of a couch for all eyes to see? A big thank-you from Lookiloos everywhere!) Take a look at the ceiling beams. Those were added as part of an extensive remodel, but they look like they’ve been there forever. “We made the house authentic to the time period and added special architectural details that weren’t there to begin with,” Monarch said. “We plastered, stuccoed, glazed. You name it, we did it.”  Pizzo’s husband, Chris, of C. Pizzo Construction, made the vision a reality.

4611918707_946c324501_o

Pizzo has her own catering company, Zona Rosa, so half the fun was pulling out her extensive collection of china, candlesticks and other tabletop decor to create elaborate tablescapes. The vignette above is part of an “outdoor room” in Pizzo’s backyard under a grand trellis. ”Anna wanted everything to be fresh,” Monarch said. “That was the main thing and it had to feel like you were walking through Provence.” For lookiloos walking through the Willow Glen home tour in early May, they were greeted by the smells of  fresh bread and lavendar and lemons.

4611916067_a94e095947_o

As part of the house remodel, the Pizzos brought in designer Lori Kagan to update the kitchen, using Emperor Light marble for the countertops. (I wish I had succulents like that.) In the adjoining dining room, a closet was turned into a wet bar.

4612529222_58436b095f_o

Monarch of Monarch Design and Studio also helped Pizzo with the master bedroom and bath. Some of Pizzo’s favorite things came from the Alameda Flea Market and other “funky vintage shops,” Monarch said.

Monarch also helped with the interior of the Kouretas home on the tour last year. (see story below.)
