Los Gatos Estate - La Estancia - A Mission Revival Kept Lively by David and Larry

From the sloping road just blocks from downtown Los Gatos, it’s easy to miss the grand estate called La Estancia. Condos are above and condos are below. And even if you know which gates the house hides behind, you’d still be lucky to catch a glimpse of the servants’ entrance.

But on a summer night, you can hear the place. The music rises up from the loggia. There’s chatter and laughter and dancing. And on some nights, David Stonesifer — in his signature round-rimmed glasses — sits at the baby grand piano and plays.

Garden Gate - Los Gatos Estate - La Estancia - A Mission Revival Kept Lively by David and Larry The home of Stonesifer and Larry Arzie — former owners of the Los Gatos Porch interior design store — has been a storied estate for more than 100 years. And in the hands of Arzie and Stonesifer for the past 27 years, it’s become a community gem whose gates have been opened for countless nonprofit fundraisers from the San Jose Symphony to the Los Gatos Police Auxiliary. Parties and weddings for their friends have become legendary.

“The place represents a collective tribute to good taste,” said Peter Carter, a former advertising executive and photographer who had his wedding reception for 800 guests at La Estancia nearly 20 years ago. “It’s a real treasure.”

The house was originally built by Frank McCullough in the 1880s as a Victorian on a 200-acre prune orchard. The main entrance at the base of the sloping hillside was marked by substantial stone columns facing Pennsylvania Street. But when the McCulloughs sold the property, the new owners sold off all but 60 acres. When the McCulloughs repurchased what was left of it some years later at the turn-of-the-century, they hired Willis Polk — the famed architect who would one day design the Filoli estate in Woodside — to transform it.

Living Room - Los Gatos Estate - La Estancia - A Mission Revival Kept Lively by David and Larry Mrs. McCullough adored the California missions and asked Polk to revive the style on her property. The story goes that Polk wanted to tear down the Victorian and start over, but the McCulloughs wouldn’t allow it. Instead, the house with two pitched roofs was pulled apart by mule, a loggia and living room were built to straddle the two sections, and a stucco and tile exterior refaced the entire building. The remodel was complete in June 1905 — and was considered one of the first Mission Revival homes in California, Arzie said. It is on the National Historic Registry.

Dr. Horace Jones bought the property in 1939 and brought the building up to date. But with new owners in the 1960s and ’70s, more land above and below was sold for condo developments. The house fell into disrepair. It was scheduled for demolition in the 1970s, but local preservationists stopped that effort.

Parlor - Los Gatos Estate - La Estancia - A Mission Revival Kept Lively by David and Larry It had been on the market for about two years when Arzie and Stonesifer decided to buy it in 1981. The two had met in the art department while students at San Jose State in 1962, and went on to establish one of the most successful interior design businesses in Los Gatos. They ran Los Gatos Porch for 32 years until they sold it in 2002. Stonesifer still works as an interior designer and painter.

He remembers when he first saw the house “sitting back at the end of a dirt patch.” It was covered in ivy with plaster missing.

“Take me through the house before it falls down or burns down,” Stonesifer told his realtor. And after insisting they also be allowed to purchase an adjoining acre scheduled for condo development, Arzie and Stonesifer became the new owners and began a grand renovation of house and grounds.

Breakfast Room - Los Gatos Estate - La Estancia - A Mission Revival Kept Lively by David and Larry Arzie, who grew up in Hollister “with a hammer in one hand and a shotgun in the other,” hopped on a tractor and began terracing and re-landscaping the property. He built a pond and fountain and new terrace out front, and vegetable gardens. Blood oranges were planted around the pool. A trellis graced the front of the guest house.

Inside, they uncovered secrets of the old Victorian, including a hidden fireplace in a guest bedroom. As sought-after decorators in Los Gatos, they filled their home with antiques from their shop and their travels.

“Most decorators’ homes don’t look like what they decorate,” Arzie said. “They just assemble instead of thinking it out. It’s a montage of things that happens in your life.”

At La Estancia, it’s a collection that evokes Old World splendor in a setting that harkens back to an era of grace and beauty, where the host plays the piano for entertainment and if he’s lucky, some of his guests will get up and sing.

And in this cherished, lively house, they often do.

Saratoga French Chateau - Hollywood Glamour at the Summit League Home Tour

Jodi and Greg Pinn had already moved on from the first designer who had suggested the interior of their newly-built French Chateau be adorned with plaid curtains and big red roosters.

But how could they articulate their vision to the next one? If a picture paints a thousand words, Greg Pinn had just the one. But it wasn’t a picture of a living room from Architectural Digest or a kitchen from Veranda.

It was a simple, sleek photograph from a men’s fashion magazine: three elegant men in layered winter clothing. A crisp white shirt with a tan wool scarf. A gray suede jacket. Charcoal cords. Tan and gray herringbone.

“I want my house to look like this,” he told Marni Leis of Mill Valley, a decorator best known for her hotel and spa interiors.

“I totally got it,” Leis said. “It personified the look — unpretentious but cool.”

So in she came with clean whites and gray pearls and neutrals that “seemed to make the whole place come alive and fit the fact that this was a young couple living in the 21st century with three kids,” she said. “We didn’t want it to pretend to be a chateau on the interior. It’s a real home firmly placed in the present time.”

Greg Pinn is a vice president of Pinn Brothers Fine Homes in Saratoga, founded by his father and uncle. At age 38, he is in charge of land development. Just before the housing crisis hit, the Pinns finished the home in Saratoga they call “Trois Fleurs” — three flowers — after the couple’s three young daughters.

Trois Fleurs was one of three homes on the Summit League Home for the Holidays home tour Dec. 4-5, where a dozen decorators brought in Christmas. From white feathers in the dining room to crystal in the craft room, the house was transformed from a neutral modern color scheme to a festive holiday display.

With Pinn in the construction industry, Leis knew the house would be both a reflection of the company’s crafstmanship as well as the family’s style.

So Leis went about “keeping it simple, keeping it useful, but taking it somewhere over the top.”

The surprises begin in the entryhall, where the black-and-white marble tiles are set at an unusual angle. Instead of straight on, or a 45-degree diamond pattern, Leis skewed it to a 65 degree angle. The kitchen counters and backsplash are gray-streaked calcutta marble, anchored by a custom La Cornue range. The dining room walls are gray with a silvery oval table, and alternating square – and round-back chairs.

“I think the whole house is special,” she said. “They carried the story throughout – spare but rich, old and new, shiny and matted.”

Graceful Murano glass chandeliers in languid pinks, blues, grays and pearls adorn the dining room and the girls’ rooms, setting an elegant tone.

But neutrals with no splash of color can be like “an art gallery with no art,” Pinn said. They were thrilled to find persimmon-colored chairs at Williams Sonoma Home in Palo Alto for the family room, which is the main room just off the entryhall.

It’s his favorite room, where the family spends most of its time.

“You can be in that one area and see five great features,” he said, from the grand staircase, to the limestone fireplace and bar, the breakfast nook and the kitchen, and the loggia, with a view through to the pool, waterfall and firepit.

“They’re all centered on the great room window,” he said.

Pinn considers the house a great collaboration. “We all had the same vision,” he said. “A little more contemporary, Hollywood glamorous, but still with some traditional feel.”

In the end, he couldn’t be happier with the results and his partnership with Leis.

“She thinks outside of the box,” he said, “and so do I.”

Fireplaces of San Jose

For centuries, the fireplace has served a central role, used for cooking and heating, whether a castle or a cave. Today, fireplaces are the gathering spot to pass popcorn and share stories with friends and family and add instant ambience and warmth to a room. When the air turns chilly, residents turn to the over 1.4 million Bay Area fireplaces.

Modern Cocktail Lounge Party

When the former visual director of Neiman Marcus in Palo Alto throws a party at his house, you’d expect the decor to be something special. But would you think he’d empty his Menlo Park cottage of furniture and transform the place into a swingin’ white cocktail lounge?

It was nothing but fun for Tim Ballengee, who filled the main rooms with white leather furniture last weekend, including a big round “daybed” in the middle of the living room. Oh, behave!

Los Altos Contemporary

For decades now, architects have been re-thinking the formal living room, replacing it with studies, music rooms and TV dens. Well, a Los Altos architect with roots in Pakistan has come up with a new one: her living room is now her swimming room. That’s right, stretching along the length of the living room is a 40-foot long, four-and-a-half foot deep swimming pool.

"My husband said ‘go for it,’" said Malika Junaid,

Rose Garden Home Tour - The Blue Victorian

If there is such a thing as destiny, Linda and Joseph Pepper and their Blue Victorian are living proof. The house that will be one of three featured in the Autumn in the Rose Garden Homes Tour this weekend (Oct. 18-19) seemed tailored just for them. But they almost missed it. Four years ago, the Peppers were around the corner, actually, waiting for their realtor to show up to make an offer on another house. They had a little time, so they took a walk.

And there it was, the blue Victorian …

English Tudor in Woodside

When Judy Cottingham Sieber walked up the driveway of the old English Tudor along the edge of Woodside Road, her heart sank. Hiding behind the tall privet hedge stood a little white cottage with a brick stoop and a wood-shingled roof with moss growing on it _ just the kind of house Judy imagined would be her own one day.

But this was a garage sale, not a house for sale.

“I turned around and walked away,” Judy said. “It’s the only garage sale I’ve ever walked away from.”

Greenest House in California

David Edwards’s house in Santa Clara may have the distinction of being the "Greenest House in California," but he wants to be clear about one thing: "a guy living in a mud hut is greener."

Thank you for that clarification, David.
