My father and his father have a similar setup for their train set around the christmas tree.
They went farther and screwed the track to the platform, which has the base built in rather than sitting on milk crates. It also has a hinge in the middle so it can fold for storage when the holidays are over.

I have fond memories of building tunnels for it to run through out of the unopened christmas presents, and watching the adults fuss over it trying to get it to run. I think it might actually have been my grandfather's train, not my father's, as it looks older than yours (though some of that may be hard living). It really was a rather frightening apparatus, all metal, so very heavy, and very loud when it was running. It had old cloth insulated wires inside, and the tracks would spark when it ran. It seemed to only have two speeds 'not enough power' and 'really fast'. We had good reason to be more than a little afraid of it.

Sorry I rambled. But thanks for bringing back the memories.

I love this! I think it's great that you found a way to incorporate it. I always liked the idea of having a train track around the tree. We did it for a few years when my son was little, but it was just a small kiddie set--nothing like this!
