Wabi Sabi: Where the Imperfect is Beautiful

Is the recession cramping your style? Wish you could afford some new home decor accessories for spring, but instead are stuck with the old stuff in the closet?

Well, San Jose floral designer Jose Ibarra says don’t sweat it. The latest trend in home decor embraces the old — and it has a hip, international name: “wabi sabi”. It’s the Japanese art of “appreciating the imperfect, the primitive, the incomplete”. And it’s a design philosophy Ibarra celebrated when he decorated his dining room table for an Easter brunch.

Cake Stand - Wabi Sabi: Where the Imperfect is Beautiful

Wabi means humble. Sabi means beauty in the natural progression of time. And for Ibarra, it means gluing together that broken urn and setting it on the buffet table with a spray of fresh lilacs. It means turning a ceramic pot upside, instead of buying a shimmery cake stand, to act as a riser for old-fashioned juice glasses. It means pulling out a broken scale to elevate your scones. It means using a cardboard egg carton as a vessel for hostess gifts.

“I don’t like all the extra tchotchkes, all the glitter,” said Ibarra, who decorates homes for parties and holidays. “I like simple.”

And that’s what wabi sabi is all about. In the book, “The Wabi-Sabi House,” author Robyn Griggs Lawrence describes wabi-sabi as appreciating the “unaffected beauty of things as they are”.

And it is not to be confused with shabby chic, which one writer says “often fills spaces with a lot of interesting finds, which can end up with too much to care for and eye clutter”. Wabi Sabi “is a way of life that starts with simplicity”. It means wildflowers and flea markets and weathered wood.

It’s easy on the pocket book. And, well, it’s fun to say.

Lounge Chair - Michael Arras Modern Designs

Small Circles Table - Michael Arras Modern Designs

Lounge Chair - Michael Arras Modern Designs

It may be that the weather in Northern California is gorgeous and I am itching to enjoy the warmth of spring – but I am on the hunt for a great lounge chair, one where I can have a glass of lemonade and watch my vegetable garden grow.  (Doesn’t that sound ideal?)  Then I stumbled onto the designs of Michael Arras on Etsy.  (This Lookiloo is in serious “want” mode.)

I love the clean lines of this lounge chair.  Hand made by Michael Arras, this comfy chair is made of cotton webbing and birch.  They are built to order for $400.00.

I am also in love with his “small circles table”.  Inspired by stones he saw on a walk with his dog, he sought to create a piece that “captured the randomness, delicacy, and beauty of those stones.”  These hand made beauties are made of birch and stained a deep cinnamon red.  Sure to be a conversation piece, they are custom built, so he can make them to fit your space ($450.00).  It seems perfect to hold my glass of lemonade!

Oakland Hills: Mid-Century Modern “Sky House” Restored

Oakland Hills: Mid-Century Modern Sky House Restored

Maybe it’s because Bennett Hall grew up in a mid-century Eichler tract home. Or maybe it’s because his wife, Helen, immediately felt the feng shui of the house. Or maybe it was the view.

But within five minutes of setting eyes on this 1960 modern house perched on an Oakland hillside with a wall of windows overlooking the San Francisco Bay, the couple knew they had to have it.

Cantilevered from the hillside on steel beams and concrete pillars, the house reminded Bennett of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water house that is perched over a waterfall. The Oakland hills house also had the feeling of floating in air (and also had its own waterfall). The Halls called it “Sky House,” and began a faithful restoration.

The house had been owned by the same family since it was built. They heard from neighbors it had been quite a party house, with music and laughter coming from the expansive deck. (Bennett found a full, unopened bottle of Crystal buried in the yard while relandscaping. One can only imagine how it got there. It will remain a mystery since the label rubbed off, leaving no proof of a date.)

One of the first projects for the Halls was restoring the huge waterfall next to the entrance. It had deteriorated into little more than a mud puddle against the house. Not only did it create a grand entrance from the outside, but it remained a focal point once inside the living room. With the waterfall to the left, the living room fireplace in the middle and the expansive deck to the right, the feng shui principle of water, fire and air lay before them in all its glory.

The original owners seemed to understand this ethos and carried the Asian influence throughout the house. Shoji screens pull out from within the walls to separate the dining room from the kitchen. The Halls leave the screens open most of the time so they can see from the kitchen sink over the dining room table and out to the expansive view.

And what a view it is: on even a hazy day they can see the Golden Gate and the high rises of downtown San Francisco. They overlook Oakland and Berkeley below and off to San Mateo to the south and Mount Tamalpais to the north.

The couple has spent the last two years reworking the landscape. They repoured the concrete switchback ramp leading from the street to the front door, decorating it with interesting textures and lines, as well as pieces of “found art”.

Bennett considers Sky House a piece of art in itself. They still have projects left to do and “we’d like to share the property as a way to preserve it.” The couple rents Sky House for special occasions and executive retreats.

Red Tulips Decals - Nouvelles Images Home Stickers

… Jason of Daddy in a Strangeland.  What is he going to do with the wall decals?

“I’d put the tulips on the walls of my 4-year-old daughter’s room, because she says tulips are her favorite flower (along with sunflowers and roses) and I love the way she says “tulips.” :)

Can’t wait to see how they turn out and hope they inspire her to say “tulips” more often!

Campbell Farmer’s Market – Lookiloos Out on the Town

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Sunday mornings in my opinion are meant for coffee and relaxing with the paper or catching up on my favorite blogs!  A great alternative is heading out and hitting Campbell’s Farmer’s Market.  You can buy coffee at the yummy Orchard Valley Coffee Roastery, a local legend for good coffee and free wi-fi.

This past Sunday the Lookiloos team and friends gathered to check out the sidewalk sales of some of our favorite decor shops and galleries.  I also want to start a backyard garden this spring, so I went to find some inspiration for my backyard.

The market did not disappoint.  Julia bought a gorgeous orchid for her back porch.  Desiree bought some framed art for her and home  office to compliment the one she already bought at Vintage and Vogue.  I walked away winning some art from an auction at Mary Medrano’s gallery and finding a few varieties of mint to plant in the garden including – chocolate and apple – yum!

Check out the market – Sundays from 8-1 p.m.
Now through October.
