Aptos Beach House

It is hard to imagine that the Holidays are just about over.  This year the Lookiloos team met a slew of new friends, peeked into dozens of jaw-dropping homes and were amazed by the number of people who said they were lookiloos too.  We hope 2008 was a good a year for you and yours and wish you all the best in 2009!

Julia, Desiree and I have been thinking a lot about our favorite stories of 2008.  Here are our top five favorite Lookiloos stories and invite you to take a second look at these beautiful spaces:

Lookiloos Year End Photo Party!

Cindy over at My Romantic Home is hosting a year in review photo party.  I got to thinking of all the photos I’ve taken over this past year and started going through them.  It was so hard to choose a few photos to create this mosaic, but it was a lot of fun.  So here it is!  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Google Couple Build Green Home in Mountain View

Shannon Madison purchased her first home when she was a 24-year-old engineer, using Apple stock. The home was a simple three-bedroom, two-bath post-war ranch in Mountain View. But one husband and two kids later, it seemed small and, quite frankly, “I was sick of it.”

Besides, by then she and her husband, Giles Douglas, were both engineers at Google — and it was easy to dream big. And dream green.

They started looking in Palo Alto, but realized that what they wanted most they already had — a corner lot, a dead-end street, easy walking distance to downtown cafes and Caltrain. So they stayed put and started from the ground up.

“If you’re going to build a house from scratch,” Shannon said. “Why not build it right?”

Google offered incentives for employees who install solar power systems. And Giles had just seen Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth.”

“That scared my husband into doing as much as possible as green as possible,” Shannon said.

They hired architect Forrest Linebarger from Vox Design Group, a Mountain View firm just a few blocks from their property that specializes in green design.

And they ended up using much more green technology than just solar power. Along with such standard green features as skylights and Vetrazzo countertops made of recycled glass and fly ash cement, they built a 10,000-gallon rainwater collection cistern and drilled for thermal gas under their property to heat and cool the home.

“We had derricks in the front yard drilling the wells for a couple of weeks,” she said. “I told neighbors I decided against the solar and was drilling for oil instead. That’s when oil was over $100 a barrel.”

The house was on track to receive a 242-point GreenPoint rating from the Berkeley-based Build It Green group, a score Shannon said would make it the “second-greenest” house in Mountain View.

The couple decided on a Craftsman-style design and were pleased that “we had to make very few concessions when we started adding the green stuff.”

They got their vaulted ceilings on the second floor and reclaimed walnut floors downstairs. The only thing she lacks, she said, is adequate storage space. Huge heating and cooling ducts and other equipment took part of their master closet as well as storage under the eaves, she said.

And she splurged on some anti-green indulgences — a wine refrigerator being one of them. “And there’s nothing green about the jacuzzi,” she said. “But I figured I had solar panels to make up for it.”

Whitney Smith Pottery

A couple of years ago a very good friend introduced me to Whitney Smith Pottery and I’ve been smitten ever since. From the cool colors to the clean lines, this pottery sucks you in. Her designs are influenced by shapes found in nature, but also Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement.

Whitney Smith Pottery - Lotus Bowls The cupcake stand with matching bell jar is a new design. This would make wonderful birthday gift, but you should fill it with a delicious cupcake. One of my favorite pieces is the nesting Lotus bowls. The lines are mesmerizing.

You can find Whitney’s work online at her Etsy shop and some brick and morter establishments. She also welcomes studio visits. I think it would be fascinating and intend to visit this coming new year. As Whitney says on her website, “Please call first to make sure I am at the studio and not hanging around my local coffee joint poisoning myself with caffeine.” And if you can’t get to Oakland be sure to check out Whitney’s etsy shop.

Green Furniture at Harvest Home Stores – Los Gatos

Green Furniture at Harvest Home Stores - Los Gatos

How do you update your living room or dining room and save the earth at the same time?  Buy sustainable furniture.  No, I am not referring to logs with a bit of moss for cushion, but

Green Furniture at Harvest Home Stores - Los Gatos - Mirror

rather reclaimed lumber that are stylish and repurposed to make your home gorgeous.

I stumbled across Harvest Home Stores in Los Gatos, CA.  This Bay Area based store features high quality furniture and several lines of green furniture.  Essentially, vintage wood is saved from buildings slated to be torn down and used to make new items, like dining room sets, mirrors, chairs and coffee tables.  Others make flooring, light stands and beds.

Scientists estimate that we are losing more than 137 species of plants and animals every single day because of rainforest deforestation.  Experts write that logging tropical hardwoods like teak, mahogany, rosewood, and other timber for furniture and other wood products is unsustainable for any length of time.  So using reclaimed wood saves trees and allows more living forests to remain intact – now how is that for a feel-good buy?

What immediately drew me into the shop was an over sized mirror, which was made with 80 year old recycled Elmwood.  I was also impressed with a beautiful dining room buffet from the Old Lumber Tahoe Dining Collection.  All of the wood is 100% reclaimed and made in Southern California.  It is perfect for casual California dining and makes for a great dinner conversation.

Los Gatos Estate – La Estancia – A Mission Revival Kept Lively by David and Larry

Los Gatos Estate - La Estancia - A Mission Revival Kept Lively by David and Larry

From the sloping road just blocks from downtown Los Gatos, it’s easy to miss the grand estate called La Estancia. Condos are above and condos are below. And even if you know which gates the house hides behind, you’d still be lucky to catch a glimpse of the servants’ entrance.

But on a summer night, you can hear the place. The music rises up from the loggia. There’s chatter and laughter and dancing. And on some nights, David Stonesifer — in his signature round-rimmed glasses — sits at the baby grand piano and plays.

Garden Gate - Los Gatos Estate - La Estancia - A Mission Revival Kept Lively by David and Larry The home of Stonesifer and Larry Arzie — former owners of the Los Gatos Porch interior design store — has been a storied estate for more than 100 years. And in the hands of Arzie and Stonesifer for the past 27 years, it’s become a community gem whose gates have been opened for countless nonprofit fundraisers from the San Jose Symphony to the Los Gatos Police Auxiliary. Parties and weddings for their friends have become legendary.

“The place represents a collective tribute to good taste,” said Peter Carter, a former advertising executive and photographer who had his wedding reception for 800 guests at La Estancia nearly 20 years ago. “It’s a real treasure.”

The house was originally built by Frank McCullough in the 1880s as a Victorian on a 200-acre prune orchard. The main entrance at the base of the sloping hillside was marked by substantial stone columns facing Pennsylvania Street. But when the McCulloughs sold the property, the new owners sold off all but 60 acres. When the McCulloughs repurchased what was left of it some years later at the turn-of-the-century, they hired Willis Polk — the famed architect who would one day design the Filoli estate in Woodside — to transform it.

Living Room - Los Gatos Estate - La Estancia - A Mission Revival Kept Lively by David and Larry Mrs. McCullough adored the California missions and asked Polk to revive the style on her property. The story goes that Polk wanted to tear down the Victorian and start over, but the McCulloughs wouldn’t allow it. Instead, the house with two pitched roofs was pulled apart by mule, a loggia and living room were built to straddle the two sections, and a stucco and tile exterior refaced the entire building. The remodel was complete in June 1905 — and was considered one of the first Mission Revival homes in California, Arzie said. It is on the National Historic Registry.

Dr. Horace Jones bought the property in 1939 and brought the building up to date. But with new owners in the 1960s and ’70s, more land above and below was sold for condo developments. The house fell into disrepair. It was scheduled for demolition in the 1970s, but local preservationists stopped that effort.

Parlor - Los Gatos Estate - La Estancia - A Mission Revival Kept Lively by David and Larry It had been on the market for about two years when Arzie and Stonesifer decided to buy it in 1981. The two had met in the art department while students at San Jose State in 1962, and went on to establish one of the most successful interior design businesses in Los Gatos. They ran Los Gatos Porch for 32 years until they sold it in 2002. Stonesifer still works as an interior designer and painter.

He remembers when he first saw the house “sitting back at the end of a dirt patch.” It was covered in ivy with plaster missing.

“Take me through the house before it falls down or burns down,” Stonesifer told his realtor. And after insisting they also be allowed to purchase an adjoining acre scheduled for condo development, Arzie and Stonesifer became the new owners and began a grand renovation of house and grounds.

Breakfast Room - Los Gatos Estate - La Estancia - A Mission Revival Kept Lively by David and Larry Arzie, who grew up in Hollister “with a hammer in one hand and a shotgun in the other,” hopped on a tractor and began terracing and re-landscaping the property. He built a pond and fountain and new terrace out front, and vegetable gardens. Blood oranges were planted around the pool. A trellis graced the front of the guest house.

Inside, they uncovered secrets of the old Victorian, including a hidden fireplace in a guest bedroom. As sought-after decorators in Los Gatos, they filled their home with antiques from their shop and their travels.

“Most decorators’ homes don’t look like what they decorate,” Arzie said. “They just assemble instead of thinking it out. It’s a montage of things that happens in your life.”

At La Estancia, it’s a collection that evokes Old World splendor in a setting that harkens back to an era of grace and beauty, where the host plays the piano for entertainment and if he’s lucky, some of his guests will get up and sing.

And in this cherished, lively house, they often do.

Room Color Schemes - A Color Surprise for Me

I work as a photographer. The majority of my business consists of shooting homes for real estate agents. They in turn use the photos for their marketing materials and on the web. I rarely shoot model homes, but this week I shot 3 different developments. Now, most of the staging I see happens to be very neutral. I guess the thinking behind that is– appeal to as many people as possible, which makes complete sense. But it does make things a little boring for someone like me who is shooting up to 25 homes a week. So, I have to say I was positively giddy when I walked into a couple of these models this week. These models had so much personality. I’m going to share 2 of my favorites.

Room Color Schemes - A Color Surprise for Me - Dining Room

First up:  A very modern condo. The outside had lots of polished metal and a very sleek feel. As you entered the door the first thing I noticed was the accent color. Tangerine. It was gorgeous. The dining room had great Asian inspired, tangerine chairs with a glass table.

The living room was adjacent to the dining and hosted an orange chair, carpet and accent wall. I love the oranges and the gray together. This place was my last stop on a very hectic day and it made me smile.

Next up:  A Family-size Townhouse. The palette used here was a poppy red and what I like to call Tiffany blue. One of my favorite rooms here is the living. I love the rug and the blue sofa, so inviting.

Now this next room was decorated to be a girl’s room and as you know I have 4 boys. So, this room is something I have never experienced, but if I had a daughter I think I’d like something like this. The fabric on the pillow is so adorable. It has a slight retro feel. And the polka dots on the walls were too cute.

Los Gatos Victorian Home in All Its Christmas Elegance on the Summit League Home Tour

Atkinson1

It was 35 years ago when Ann and Tom Atkinson first laid eyes on the old farmhouse Victorian in Los Gatos. Almost a century old at the time, it had been home to numerous families over the decades and for a time was a boarding house. It needed a lot of work.

Los Gatos Victorian Home in All Its Christmas Elegance - Staircase
But this couple had vision and when they walked in, they said to each other quite simply, "Yep, this is it."

Their parents, on the other hand, "thought we were crazy," Ann said.

The house was built in 1886 on two-and-a-half acres by Grace and Levi Kimball and is considered bracketed farmhouse style. The entryhall is what first captivated the Atkinsons. The staircase is a 180-degree turned balustrade.

Over the past four decades, which included the devastating 1989 earthquake, the couple has lovingly restored and updated the gracious home. They remodeled the kitchen and family room and, when a new foundation was added after the earthquake, built a master suite above the family room.

"We call it 'Suck-A-Buck Manor,'" Ann said. "But I love this place."

The couple opened their house to more than a dozen decorators to transform the house into Christmas splendor for the Summit League Home for the Holidays tour in early December. (Here are the two other houses from the home tour, a turn-of-the-last century Craftsman and a contemporary French Chateau.)
