Sitting on the sidelines watching my son’s soccer game, I found myself chatting with an old friend. Our kids had gone to the same school for six years and were the best of friends. But we had decided to switch schools for jr. high and with best intentions of staying close, we drifted apart. So I was excited to learn our families could reconnect on the soccer field once a week.
We exchanged tidbits about what was new in our families. How work and school was going. It almost felt like we had never been apart. Of course, I had to tell her about Lookiloos and she said she wasn’t much of a "Lookiloo", too busy with work, school and life. Hmmm, not really a Lookiloo? How could that be. Isn’t everyone a Lookiloo. Oh well. The subject switched gears to book clubs. Oh I remember my book club. It was a great escape, not only through the books we were reading but the monthly get-togethers. She said it was terrible — she’d been working so many hours that she didn’t read the book. And I bet it was the first time she didn’t. I know this woman and she is an avid reader. She was going to call to say she couldn’t make it to the meeting, but then she learned the new book club member was hosting and she had heard through the grapevine that this woman’s home was spectacular.
She decided, book read or not, she’s going to the meeting to check out that house. Now, I sat and listened to the wonderful details of this home. And yes, it sounded spectacular, but I thought for a moment…she is a Lookiloo. I knew it. We all have that, wanting to know how other people live. We look for inspiration for our own homes. We look to solve issues like paint colors and traffic flow. And on the flip side I think we all would love someone to tell us how wonderful that new vase is or wow! you did that yourself?!!
So, leaving the field I said to myself "Welcome to the Club". She may think she’s not a Lookiloo but I know her secret.
