Built It Green Home Tour Recap

Typically home tours are all about the Persian rugs, the antiques, crown molding and the designer window coverings, the Build It Green Home Tour featured that and so much more.  I spent the morning comparing the homes in Santa Clara county and found that my fellow lookiloos and I talked more about the "bones" of the house than what we could find adorning it.

There were a total of 14 homes on the tour, 2 stood out for their sheer difference in approach.  Both homes were in located in the upscale Willow Glen neighborhood of San Jose off the 280 freeway, within walking distance to the trendy Willow Glen main street, Lincoln Avenue.

Built It Green Home Tour Recap - Cherry Avenue
The first home on sunny Cherry Avenue was built by Lorrie Broderick, for whom this was her second venture as a developer.  She purchased the plans for the home online and set out to find ways to make her investment  more green.   I am not quite sure what I expected when I walked in, but the home was gorgeous and modern and frankly, blew my expectations for what "green" meant.  It  quickly inspired me to think about how I could replicate many of the amenities Lorrie installed in my own home.

The bathrooms had Watersense ultra low flush and dual flush toilets and occupancy sensors. They also featured Energy Star bathroom fans, which meant that these fans used 65% less energy, reducing rot, mold and other moisture problems.  The house is well insulated and built with high-performance windows, thus the three story home only has air conditioning on the top floor.

Built It Green Home Tour Recap - Cherry Ave Backyard
Most interesting to me as a parent was the backyard.  Willow Glen being a family friendly neighborhood, Lorrie assumed that the buyers of her home would most likely have a family with small children.  Rather than pouring a full concrete backyard, she saved part of the yard in case a family wanted to put in a jungle gym.  She put down recycled rubber mulch on the right side of the yard which matched the real mulch on the left side.  Purchased at costco.com, she said this recycled material ensured that there would be no mold, slight cushioning for those inevitable falls and no splinters for little toes.  Great idea.

Overall the home had big and small touches for easy green living.  Lorrie was able to recycle 90% of construction waste, used spray foam insulation and low VOC interior paint.

Built It Green Home Tour Recap - Hicks Ave Hallway

In contrast, the home on Hicks Avenue, called Villa Terra,  is architect’s Noel Cross’ dream home. Hidden from the main street by a garden of native California landscaping, this home can be described as a modern day "adobe".  The exterior walls are PISE (pneumatically impacted stabilized earth) – a type of rammed earth construction, where a moistened mix of earth and concrete were sprayed through a hose under pressure against form work.  When the form work is removed then the walls are done.  The results are old world rustic.  The house stays cool and is warmed with radiant floor heating.   The ceiling is insulated with recycled blue jean materials.   The house also featured both a passive solar heating system and a 5.5kW photovoltaic system, where any extra energy generated can be sent back to the power grid for a credit on their monthly bill.

Built It Green Home Tour Recap - Hicks Ave Brickwork
What stood out to me was how much of the home’s materials were reclaimed, that is to say came from other tear down remodeling projects.  Cross used ceiling beams from Eli Thomas store from the old Town and Country Village shopping center, bought two sinks for $15.00 from Whole House Salvage Yard and lockers from the "Robe Room" from the O’Connor Mansion from Notre Dame High School.  The side patio is made up of used bricks reclaimed from 15 different homes.

Built It Green Home Tour Recap - Hicks Ave Dining Room
Overall, the home was absolutely spectacular.  The home was expansive, yet inviting.  I could easily see myself cooking Thanksgiving dinner in their large kitchen or hosting a dinner party that spilled out onto the brick terrace.

Green can certainly be gorgeous and Villa Terra on Hicks Avenue certainly drove that point home.

Sonya Paz - Art Out of this World - Issues: Blue StilettoSonya Paz - Art Out of this World - Sax in the City

With art pieces named "Sax in the City", "Issues:Blue Stiletto" and "Pouring it Out on the Green", this lookiloo knew that Sonya Paz was something special.  Her use of bright colors and shapes is what drew me in and has propelled her nationally as a leader in the new "pop art" movement.  A regular on the local art and wine festival circuit, one would be hard pressed in Santa Clara county to find someone who does not know Sonya Paz or has not seen her lively work.   With a cubist and modern art perspective, Sonya breathes life into everyday objects, from wine glasses to the Golden Gate Bridge adding a touch of whimsy and the unexpected into your home or office.

Sonya Paz - Art Out of this World - Watch
To push the unexpected even further, Sonya has also created a line of wearable art, so you can take her vibrant perspective with you wherever you go.   Last year her watches were part of the much coveted "VIP Goodie Bags" at the Academy Awards and Sundance Film Festivals. One could catch Samuel Jackson and Quentin Tarantino in one of her fashionable watches ($85.00), or buying ceramics and clocks.  In addition, she recently created pendants ($40.00) and silver jewelry ($55.00) that carry her images.

Sonya Paz - Art Out of this World - Sami Pendant
According to Paz, "my art reflects my life", which is apparent in the range of her subjects.  For example, her love of her dog Sami has inspired her to get involved with animal charities.  Her art is often a fundraising vehicle for these local causes for example, she moved both art and animal lovers to become new donors to the Santa Clara County Humane Society at the recent "Fur Ball".

This week Sonya and five other artists kick off a new exhibit this weekend, Cosmic Art of Robots and Space. With artists from California to Arizona, this eclectic group will highlight various pieces that were inspired by robots and the cosmos.   Sonya remarked that what sets this apart from other exhibits is that "you get to meet and talk with all the artists in one space" and that one can actually buy space age style art and add it immediately to their home collection.

Sonya Paz - Art Out of this World - Robots and Space
"I grew up in an Eichler home, and was inspired by that sense of style.  Some of the pieces available will be like Eames meets Herman Miller.  Come to the show and you can ‘atomically’ decorate your home,"  encourages Paz.  With artists including Christine Benjamin, Tracy Cox, Doug Horne, Paul Loughridge, Sonya Paz and Shaunna Peterson, the show is sure to be out of this world!

Opening reception:
Saturday, October 4, 2008, 5:00-9:00 p.m.
Open to the public. This exhibit runs through October 17th.

Modern Prairie Style

Modern Prairie Style

When general contractor John L. Fox set out to build a spec house on a charming street in Willow Glen, he first considered a crowd-pleasing Tudor style.

But the intimacy of a Tudor didn’t work with what he really wanted in the house _ high ceilings.

So he consulted with his designers, Monty Lucas and Laura Winter.

“What this neighborhood could use is a prairie style,” Lucas said, the style popularized by architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

Modern Prairie Style - Living Room

But Fox was reluctant at first.

“It was going to limit who would buy this house,” Fox said. “Not everyone understands prairie style, not everyone gets it.”

He needn’t have worried. A young Cisco executive riding her bike through the neighborhood got one glimpse of it and put in an offer. She not only got prairie style, she embraced it _ with a modern twist.

“The true prairie craftsman,” she said, “can be very dark. For me, that would be hard to live in.”

She hired San Francisco interior designer Carol Grier, who often works with her architect husband Jerry Kler, to complete the vision.

Grier usually sticks to strictly modern projects. But she knew well the architecture of Wright and had toured many of his homes in the midwest. At the same time, she found some of the furniture that Wright designed to be “clunky and heavy.”

For the living room, Grier directed her client, who prefers not to be named, to the furnishings of DeSousa Hughes shown at the San Francisco Design Center, which were “reminiscent of prairie furniture, but a modern version.”

That means softer cushions, more interesting fabrics, a variety of woods, she said. When she showed the homeowner, “she just clicked right into it.”

It also worked with her client’s collection of Asian furnishings and textiles she had collected from her travels, her father’s wood-turned vessels, and her boyfriend’s collection of hunting trophies that fill the upper stairwell.

Modern Prairie Style - Dining Room

For the dining room, Grier suggested a substantial table and chairs by Armani, the fashion designer. For the buffet, they chose a toad skin piece by Robert Kuo for McGuire.

With windows in the main rooms that reach eight feet high _ instead of the standard 6-foot-8 _ light penetrates deep into the rooms. That’s a trick, contractor John Fox said, he picked up from the work of Frank Lloyd Wright.
